Start Small

As you are starting out you do not have full clarity in where you are going.

As well you do not have a full understanding on how the financial world works and what is available to you.

So start small:

  • I want to retire by age 50 with a million dollars.
  • etc.

Create a System That Can Evolve

Create a system that can evolve over time as you learn more and change your plans.

  • Grab a notebook and on page write down your plan.
  • Grab a word document and write down your plan.
  • Use OneNote; create a notebook for Financials; create a section for Plans; create a Page for your current plan
  • Whatever suits your style.

Evolve

Each year or whenever a significant thig happens, update your plan.

  • A million dollars is no longer enough to retire, I want ten million dollars.
  • I get married and need to extend the plan.
  • I have kids.
  • Etc.

Results

You have a plan written down.

You can update, add, change the plan if/as needed.

You revisit the plan at various points in time to actually make these changes.

Things to Consider

When making your plan consider the following things (and more):

  • Financial Independence
    • When?
    • How much?
    • etc.
  • Rate of savings
  • Who are you planning for?
    • You?
    • Spouse?
    • Kids?
    • Other?
  • Current Net Worth
    • Assets
    • Liabilities
  • Expenses and budgets
  • Emergency Fund
  • Debt payoff
  • Investing
  • Estate Plan

But recall, do not get overwhelmed by the above list. Start small and evolve over time.
